“I have a question about how the air flow is generated. The air seems to come from the small slit in the oval portion of the machine. However, I only feel air on the sides of the slit, and not the top or bottom. Is this normal?”

Yes, this is normal. If you look closely at your unit you can see that there are no air passages at the top and bottom of the oval (the curved parts). The "slits" are dark the whole way around giving the impression that it is all the same, but the top and bottom are filled in. All the air comes from the two sides.
