Hi Sue, this is Kelly with Dyson. The Dyson HP04 Pure Hot + Cool air purifier does need to be in either heating or cooling mode to have the benefits of air purification. When on, the machine draws in air from the bottom of the machine, where it's purified through the filter and expelled in to the room. CADR stands for Clean Air Delivery Rate. This is the volume of filtered air delivered by a purifier in a given time frame. This measurement does not represent the quality of the air leaving the unit, only how much. For this reason it is largely irrelevant as a measure. This does not in any way represent a machine's ability to effectively mix the purified air with the ambient air in the room. CADR testing is performed in an empty room, with a ceiling fan simulating air movement - this is not indicative of the live environment our products are used in. Best wishes, Kelly Dyson Customer Support
