Yes, you can put lithium batteries instead of alkaline ones.
For my use, the lithium ones last at least twice as long.

These can be used just like traditional alkaline batteries of the same size. I've had them last much longer in flashlights, wireless doorbells, and cameras. They'd likely last noticeably longer in your thermostat.

Yes, but I'd check with the manufactures recommendations. Not all electronics recommend using lithium batteries.

Yes they will work just fine and will last a very long time in your low demand thermostat. I have had similar area of usage in a remote weather temperature sender. They lasted over six years, hard to believe! When your concerned, you should notice a "battery" change notice on your thermostat, or just have them tested that you can see for yourself if low on voltage like (1.4v) before replacing. I had them put in my thermostat. The batteries in it had died after many years and I had just purchased the Lithium batteries to put in my Comcast Remote so gave them to the service man to put in my thermostat and he didn't say they wouldn't work and so far the thermostats are still working. Then I purchased more to put in my Comcast Remote because they eat up the regular batteries and hopefully these will last longer.
