Yes is true and you have to try and get one paid by yourself and that right at least they did their best to give you six months of free Apple Music,and I think that that the best they can offer

You may have redeemed this same one more than once on the same account personally I've used this method 3-4 times on the same account then it told me I couldn't do it anymore but if it's your first time maybe just try to fully cancel your subscription if it isn't over yet then retry or contact Apple by email.

If the current subscription is not on going anymore, it should work, if not could be that it’s too recent hence it not working. But if you have a ongoing subscription it won’t work either way. Hope this helps you!

You might have to start from the beginning !
Cancel the Apple music subscription 
Then go to where you redeem the free trial
After redeem the free trail

See if that works;)

It's not going to let you get it for free if you have already payed it for that month wait till next month and then don't pay for it just come and reorder the gift card again and then follow the instructions it gives you with the redeem link you get in the email from best buy.
