“Why do the photos show this microwave flush with the upper and side cabinets but the instructions say it NEEDS to extend past the cabinet front and to use filler blocks to move the microwave forward if your cabinets are deeper than 13" with the doors?”

Excellent question. If I could do it over, I would not have shimmed it unless the cabinet was over 14” deep. Our cabinets are 13.25” deep to the front of the door, and we shimmed it with 3/8” plywood across the whole backside. The microwave sticks out way further than it needs to, like over an inch extra, based on the space behind vents on the top and how the hinge side extends upon opening.
