“If we set mode to Auto, fan speed is too high for sleeping. If we set mode to Cool, and fan speed to Low, several times through the night the AC shuts down completely and seems loud at first when it restarts itself. Is there any way around this behavior?”

So far I've developed the opinion this is a noisy air conditioner, but I'm sure it's probably because I haven't used it much. I reside in NW Montana and it isn't quite warm enough to put to work. I hope somebody else can give you the information you're looking for...
