“This unit has a small cardboard card mounted on the right side inside the cavity, just beyond the light. This card is secured by a small screw and tabs that fit into slots. Is this supposed to be removed?”

That's not cardboard, its plastic...and I wouldn't remove it!

The cardboard (mica) covers the waveguide system that feeds microwave energy into the cavity and should not be removed. The microwave should not be used for any function if this cardboard cover is not in place. Keep in touch! SUE@GEA
