“If venting internally, does the microwave need to extend past the cupboards or can it sit flush?”

• extend past cabinet face. Vent from the top front of the microwave.

• For proper installation, the microwave should not be installed below a cabinet deeper than 13". It is not designed for a flush installation. -Vikki@GEAppliances
