Probably not required, but likely recommended, otherwise your vent pipe might over time start to develop odors from things like fish that would be neutralized by the charcoal filter. Check your owners manual to see if it has any recommendations. I just replaced my old internally vented one that didn't even have a charcoal filter installed, never really noticed a problem but did notice a bit of residue from the fan exhaust on the underside of my nearby cabinetry develop over time.
