We just replaced a similar GE microwave too. Ours was from 2015, maybe 2014. The vent fan was in the exact same place and yes you are able to change the vent to go UP or BACK.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I replaced my F1SS (2016) with this model and there is no size difference. The vent fan is the same and you're able to vent it out the top or move the fan to vent out the back of the unit.

If you want to vent the unit outside, it will require a hood exhaust duct.
