Hello there, thank you for reaching out with this excellent question. The microwave is at a slight slant, which makes up for the discrepancy you are seeing. The height measures differently depending on which end of the microwave you are measuring, and the rear mounting plate has no effect on the overall height of the unit. From the rear, it measures 16 1/2", which means that a space that is 16 1/4" will not accommodate this microwave.
