Hi Wendy - The over-the-range microwave ovens are designed for adaptation for the following three types of ventilation: 1. Outside Exhaust (Vertical – Delivered from factory in vertical position); 2. Outside Exhaust (Horizontal); 3. Recirculating (Non-vented ductless). The instructions for recirculating are provided on page 13 of the Installation guide at the following link: https://products.geappliances.com/MarketingObjectRetrieval/Dispatcher?RequestType=PDF&Name=49-40675-4.PDF - Also, the charcoal filter necessary for recirculating is included (JX81L). The GE model can be vented both externally as well as internal over the top of the microwave. The instructions show you how.
