When replacing an over-the-range microwave, the mounting bracket included with the new microwave should be used since the mounting bracket is specific to each model. The new screws, bolts, and exhaust adapter should also be used. Also, all 30" over-the-range microwaves are approximately the same width, and are designed to fit into a 30" wide cabinet opening. • A:Answer I replaced my 16 year old GE microwave with a current GE model. I removed the old one and left the mounting bracket in place. When the installers got to my home, I asked if the existing bracket would work. They compared it to the new bracket and they were slightly different but would work. They mounted the new unit on the old bracket with no problems. The install took less than 10 minutes.

If the microwave runs but is not heating, it could be one of many components. Make sure the “Timer” function was not inadvertently used. Check to ensure the door is closed firmly. Close it firmly, but do not slam. This confirms the engagement of the door's safety mechanisms. Reset the electronics by unplugging or by turning off power at the circuit breaker for 30 seconds or so. For safety reasons, we offer no do-it-yourself repair advice on microwave ovens due to an internal high voltage capacitor (can hold a high voltage charge even after it has been unplugged).
