Hi Melody - Thanks for choosing GE and welcome to the family! Recommended temperatures are 37F in the refrigerator and 0F in the freezer. The numbers on the control do not represent a temperature. The fresh food control regulates how long the compressor runs, and in effect, how cold both compartments can become. Great question!  Mine is 43 degrees in the fridge and about 8 in the freezer.  I think my unit is defective.  I am having geek squad come out to service.
