Does the water filter have to be installed for it to make water and ice? My current Whirlpool comes with a cap to use instead of the filter — does this one have similar functionality? null

It has a filter and needs to be changed every 12 months.

Hi there,

While we do recommend using a filter in your refrigerator, you are not required to do so. A bypass plug should come with your unit upon delivery and, should you choose, you can insert that plug into the filter housing to forego the use of a filter. Doing so will not allow your water to be filtered unless you then have a whole home water filtration system in place. Do note that the dispenser will not call for water if nothing is inserted into the filter housing. We hope that this helped! Thank you so much for your question. -Michael
