Hi PeterJ - Thanks for choosing GE! While the ranges can be installed side-by-side, we recommend checking the installation instructions at the following link to determine space requirements/clearances for this model: https://products.geappliances.com/MarketingObjectRetrieval/Dispatcher?RequestType=PDF&Name=31-11105-4.pdf - The following are general minimum clearances for ranges: •1 ½ inches to nearest adjacent sidewall above the cooktop on both sides. •30 inches between the cooktop and a cabinet. •0 inches for sides below the cooktop. Keep in touch at GEAppliances.com. Sue

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. That is a technical question for the manufacturer if you are talking about heat distribution and such. Otherwise, there is a lip around the top of the stove such that an overflowing pot would not spill out onto the floor (or onto another stove, if side-by-side). I have a barrier around my stove that covers the gap between the countertop and the top of the stove. I think most stores sell these, but I had my handyman make mine out of a metal piece of threshold I had lying around (must know how to miter the back corners). If I were doing this, I would definitely want some kind of barrier, but I do not think it is necessary. Also, not sure how one would attach it to the barrier at the back where it overlaps the counter.
