“I was looking into the ac unit under the flap where cold air comes out and I saw black stuff. I think it is black mold and I have been sick. I cleaned it at first thinking it was dust, but its appeared again. Has this been an issue with these units?”

No. There has not been a manufacturing-widespread problem. If it IS black mold, please call your local Health Department immediately as it sounds as it is an isolated incident and it is airborne-and can become very dangerous if left unaddressed.
