“I see customer photos of this microwave installed with no clearance on the sides, top or back. Are they risking damaging the microwave by installing it this way? Could I have it touching a cabinet on the right side, but not the left or bottom?”

I just replaced my old GE microwave with this one. It fits into the shelf we have for it, though there is no real clearance on left, right, or bottom, and it is pushed back all the way. There is clearance above, though, which should allow ventilation of any heat from the back. It appears to work fine, and you should be okay. (However, the general installation instructions recommend having 3 inches clearance on each side and on top, and 1 inch in the rear.) The new model is slightly wider and deeper than the old one, so that the old trim kit does not fit around it. We shall try without trim. While expensive, this model is still shallow enough to fit in our shelf, so we don't have to sacrifice a lot of counter space.
