Not intentionally but I have used just one (R) because I misplaced the other (L). It worked fine before and after I found the missing (L) bud.

You can use one/either bud by itself while the other charges in the case or whatever.

Hi Joe, you need to pair both buds, but then you can use just one bud if you want. You can just wear a single bud.

They pair as, well, a pair. But you can leave one bud in the case and just drive with the other one.
