It won't work on unpredictable sound and it doesn't lessen the sound pressure. Even if it cancelled out a machine gun firing at a constant rate, the sound pressure is what damages your ears, not your perception of the sound. Think of it as an equally loud anti-sound. The only benefit for gunfire is the noise isolation from a tight fit, but that won't be dampening enough. There are overear Bluetooth/wired hearing protection that work as headphones, with noise filtering pass thru which can also be combined with foam ear inserts (hear-os) to handle what you are asking, at a lower cost.
