The hole in your slow cooker lid is for ventilation which prevents the cover from forming a vacuum and sealing itself to the stoneware vessel as it cools. Your slow cooker was calibrated with this cover so cooking times will not be affected. This hole is also to prevent the lid for forming a vacuum seal for models that have lid latches as well as a hole to insert a probe for models that include a probe..
