“Can anyone point out what's the proper ram chips sold by best buy to upgrade for this unit? Is it nessary to replace both, or can I save some $ by retaining 1 OEM 4gb chip and mismatch with 8+4 or a 16gb and 4gb chip. Thanks”

The correct RAM for this system is DDR4-2933 SDRAM. You should run in it matched pairs for the best performance.
