Yes, this can be programmed for other uses. However I'm not sure what the differences are between this model and the HP 50G.

My last HP was a 48GX, so can't speak to the 50g, but I found this review interesting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yfYeCGWZrs.

I get the impression that the Prime has tremendous capability(processing power), but the old 48-series were aimed toward professionals (scientists & engineers, etc.), while the Prime is somewhat more user friendly for non-professionals & the educational market, including high-school math.
