Yes, this can be programmed for other uses. However I'm not sure what the differences are between this model and the HP 50G.

Also, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_HP_graphing_calculators I get the impression that the Prime has tremendous capability(processing power), but the old 48-series were aimed toward professionals (scientists & engineers, etc.), while the Prime is somewhat more user friendly for non-professionals & the educational market, including high-school math.
