“Is this laptop able to be charged via USB-C? I have only found conflicting answers online, or that it does charge, but not as fast as the barrel plug.”

No. This uses a Barrel Connector charger only. The USB-C port is for data and runs at USB 3.0 speed. It does allow for charging a device such as a smartphone through Power Delivery from the laptop.
