It doesn't start until you activate it, but for how long you have to use it and/or tack it on to your existing membership you should email Hydrow support directly. support@hydrow.com

Your Hydrow membership begins when you activate your membership directly on your Hydrow rower. You can do this by signing up for Hydrow's monthly membership, or by entering your prepaid yearly activation code. After activation but you should check with the company to see how long you can hold it after purchase

You have to call Hydrow support to apply it if you already have a subscription running. It extends the end date, it doesn't matter whether you activate it now or in December - you'll get an extra year.
