“we only have 1.5 inches on either side of the built in area for this refrigerator, is that a significant problem? should we not purchase?”

I don't really see an issue there.These new refrigerators are designed to disperse heat from the side.It doesn't get very hot but side of the fridge is warm.I have mine set in a space where I have about 2 inches and I don't have any issues.Hooe that helps.
