California's Proposition 65 (CP65), also called the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act, was enacted in 1986. It is intended to help Californians make informed decisions about protecting themselves from chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. A new amendment to the law (passed in 2016 and effective August 30, 2018) requires reasonable warnings defined by the California Code of Regulators. This new amendment requires a warning label if two conditions are met: (1) the product contains one or more substances of a list of over 900 chemicals AND (2) there is a human exposure of concern above “safe harbor” levels (where applicable) resulting in potential reproductive or carcinogenic impact.
