A smart TV connects to the internet via WiFi to allow for streaming services via apps of much more TV content similar to having cable or satellite service at a lower cost, while also allowing connection to an antenna for over the air free channels. A regular TV can't connect to the internet; if you only want the free local channels a regular TV will work fine.
