This is a 'passive' cable, and only works with DisplayPort version 1.3 and higher. a.k.a 'Dual Mode' a.k.a. 'DP++' . It didn't work on my DisplayPort 1.2. I had to buy an 'Active' cable which does the converting with a little circuit board built in.

Unfortunately there's no way to tell from the hardware itself what version of DisplayPort it will support. Check the original specifications of your device.
