Actually, you do. The light doesnt need to be plugged to the 3.5mm jack to work. You can plug the mic and turn on and hold the light with your hand near the phone.

And, that the light does not have to be attached to the phone at all - you just turn it on and point it at the subject while you take the picture. So, the short answer is "yes."
