The initial charge usually takes a couple of hours. 

You can listen while the speaker is charging and the blue light indictates the unit is on.

The initial charge will take a couple of hours. Subsequent charges will not take that long, only about an hour. You can definitely play it while it's charging. I pulled mine out of the box, plugged it into USB port in my car and was listening to it in about 2 minutes. Just as a side note the battery life is outstanding.
