If you put the phone screen side down, the screen does not touch the surface.

Yes, the top and bottom of the case are a little protruded that the front glass of the phone does not touch the surface when the phone is face down. I don't know how much it would protect the glass from cracking/shattering when it falls face down. All I know is that my phone dropped on the surface from my pockets yesterday and my phone did not get scratched or cracked.

No, you will need a good screen protector to help with the face of the phone if you drop it.

The do not protrude very much in the top or the bottom so if you are looking for something that allows you to place the phone facing down you will not get that from this phone case.

No the face will not be protected if you drop the phone face down. It does have raised edges for protecting the face when the phone is placed face down on a table top.
