“Does this microphone easily pick up background noise?”

• Not in my experience. It picks up sound from right above where the Mute button is (where you should be speaking into). The rest of the mic isn't supposed to pick up sound. If you have it on the included stand, it may pick up some of the typing keys, especially if you have a mechanical keyboard. But random noises are for the most part not picked up.
