“When I have this adapter plugged in the sound stops working. When I unplug it the sound works again. Am I missing something or is that a problem with my adapter?”

It’s a flawed design that will try to reroute audio to your monitors. On some systems you can bypass this via the sound setting for your OS, but I would recommend ditching this adapter and going with a proper hub as well.
