yes If you are using a cable box then hook them up to cable box then one person use the head set and everyone else can listen to TV. This way you can mute TV and listen with headphones and not bother others and still hear everything. This is great for hard of hearing and the rest of the family can listen too.

If you want it to only be heard through the headphones then just mute the tv. I turn the volume of the TV down to the level that's right for me and then my husband has the headphones on and controls their volume and can hear at the right volume for him.
