You can use each bud by itself.

They detect that only one is being used and go into some type of phone mode. ie, the controls act exactly the same tap to answer, double tap to hang up. When they detect that both earbuds are active, they are in more of a headset mode and the left and right controls handle different things. I have swapped them out during a call, my left ear will be running low, so just pop the right ear in and put the left on back in the case.
