Yes, by just using the right earbud you get mono sound and the heart rate monitor.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.You can remove the left earbud and listen with just the right bud. The left bud requires the right bud to be in your ear. Also they have a pass through feature which feeds outside sounds to the earbuds, so you don't have turn down the volume too much or remove your earbuds to hear what's going on.
