You would most likely need to use an adapter because most European countries use 220 VAC. The adapters use a step down transformer to lower the voltage to 110 VAC; which is what most US appliances use. That is a very oversimplified answer, but I doubt you want a history lesson on DC vs AC. In addition, most other countries don't use the same type of plugs as the U.S.
