“Can you use this by itself? Do I need to buy anything else from Kaleidescape for this to work? It's unclear if I need to add a TerraPrime Server to store the movies on of if there is software I need to install on a PC to store downloaded movies.”

From what I see on Kaleidescape's website you would need a one of their Terra servers to store movies to and access. The Strato V seems to store up to 10 movies and is a player as well for the original price of the C.
