The outside can get warm but not hot; You are supposed to allow 4” of open space around the unit just to be safe. The top can be used as a cooling rack which is why you see a ridged surface. You can get even toasting or broiling if you place the rack evenly between the top and bottom elements. It’s been a great little stove but I wish it was built heavier and more semi-professional like a kitchenaid mixer (but that may have made it cost a lot more).
