There is a lever on the right hand side that allows you to raise and lower the bowl. You lower the bowl and then it lifts right out.

Other than it looks impressive sitting on my counter I just can't seem to get used to it. I use a mixer frequently as I have a baking business on the side. I received mine as a gift for Christmas. After using an Oster Kitchen Center for 35 years, I find this mixer very cumbersome. You can't scrape the bow without lowering the lever first, you can't add ingredients without them getting all over the place, and the bowl itself is very difficult to line up the bowl lift. This thing drives me crazy! Wish they still made the Oster Kitchen Center.

The other model is a tilt head in which you will tilt the head of the machine back to get the bowl out. You will need to research more to find which item is best suited for you.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I've used both the tilt-head style and the bowl-lift style. For both it's best if you take the attachments off first (paddle, whisk, etc) before trying to remove the bowl. This actually reduces the mess because you're able to capture the batter (or whatever you're making) in the bowl without it getting all over. The tilt head style has a different bowl-securing method: the base of the bowl has threads that screw into the base. This bowl-lift design has pins for the bowl - two on the side and one in the back. It can be fiddly to get used to but I like it; it is very secure. I prefer to raise/lower the bowl (bowl-lift) rather than raise/lower the machine (tilt-head). The tilt-head style is a better entry level option for most people. If you are cranking out large batches of things, make mashed potatoes for a lot of people on a regular basis, or make a lot of bread, go pro for the larger capacity work bowl and stronger motor. The KitchenAid website has side-by side comparisons. This was the perfect model for me.

While the other answer is correct, that there is a lever that lowers the bowl, it is still not enough clearance to remove the bowl without removing the attachment first period you are correct, it is rather messy and irritating.
