Move the lever to the rear to reset. Then go to the speed you want. The smell is from it being new and will quit after a few uses.

Please try again later.It is not normal and it is possible that there was a current differential between the outlet and the mixer and it might have experienced a surge which compromised the internal motor wires or housing. I recommend plugging it into a surge protector with an auto-off switch if it does surge and if it still smells like something is burning return or exchange it for a different one at the store. If Best Buy needs to replace it and does not have one in stock the corpus christi texas store has at least 3 on hand if they want to store to store transfer it for you.
