Yes, It doesn't have to be mounted. it can be used either ways.

I think it could be but I think anytime you pull on the door to open it the whole thing would move since they aren't made to stay still on a flat surface. Also it might not be stable on a flat surface either

You can, but why would you? The countertop models are less expensive.

This is made to be OTC. The lights and fan intake are on the bottom of the unit. and the exhaust fan is on top. I would not use the as a counter top unit.
