Depends on how large of a pot.  I used 10QT pots for chili and pasta, didn’t seem like it bothered or got in the way of the microwave.

Yes can damage the microwave the steam can get into the brain of the unit and damage it

Hello, It is best to leave a glass of water in the oven when not in use. The water will safely absorb all microwave energy, if the oven is accidentally started. We don't recommend to put anything on top of the microwave. ^Vanessa
