The vent is not required every time you use the microwave. (I have never had one that actually came on automatically in the 7-8 I have owned in my life) The purpose of the vent is to act like a range hood vent since these are installed in lieu of a traditional range hood to vent the smoke from range top cooking. The vent does not have anything to do with the microwave cooking function.

Thank you two for your answers!!! This microwave is SO QUIET!!!!! I thought that there was no internal fan and I needed to use the external one. My mistake. My old one was so noisy I did not realize a microwave could be this quiet. LG has some great products!!!

Thank you, but per the manual, I do not need to turn on the vent fan except when I am using the cook top below it to avoid smoke etc from causing issues with the microwave.  Apparently this is when you would turn on the fan and then set it for the number of minutes you think you will be cooking on the cooktop below.

I thought the microwave did not have a fan inside and I had to turn it on manually.  Apparently is is so quiet I did not realize it was on.  My old one was so noisy I had to raise my voice to talk to my husband.
