The smooth black isn't exactly high gloss,. nor is it flat matte finish. It closer to an egg shell (in paint terms).

There are many Best Buys in Austin, Texas, but not all stores carry samples of all appliances. Look for a store with a Pacific Kitchen & Home section; it has the more samples. I even drove to San Antonio to view a sample of a model that interested me. You want to feel yourself using it and imagine it in your home. I took a sample of my flooring with me. I really love the appearance of black stainless steel and I almost went with it, until I read that the black coating often peels away, revealing the stainless underneath. If you want black, I believe that smooth black is better...and "blacker"...than black stainless and cheaper as well. Smooth black provides an appealing visual contrast to light cabinets.
