“Does the inside light turn on during the operation of the microwave? If so, how do I turn it on so that I can watch the cooking?”

It comes on automatically and stays on the entire time of the cooking. Note, however, that the interior of this unit is dark, not white, so it can be difficult to make out much while it is running (I noticed other microwaves with dark interiors -- I don't know why this is done, it doesn't make sense to me).
