“I have this vented to the outside, however, a significant amount of air is coming from the top vent of the unit when the vent is turned on (returning air back into the kitchen from the top of the unit). Is this normal?”

Before installation the exhaust fan should be properly aligned to exhaust outside. It requires taking screws off the rear top of the unit and changing the fan units orientation. If not done properly you’ll get recirculated air.
