“I don't understand the purpose of the remote. Can the TV be operated using the LG remote without having to turn on/off the soundbar? I have another 65" LG OLED that seamlessly used a Sonos Beam (2d gen) and no remote is offered or needed. Thanks.”

You can use the remote to control all functions of the product, from turning the power on/off to enabling cinematic sound. Soundbar SP8YA features TV Remote Compatibility. It can be adjusted with LG TV Remote control as well as other brands. ^Daphane

Sound bar can operate with either control.

It allows you to control all of the sound bar settings (volume, input, sound profile, surround on or of off, night mode, etc.) You can also do all of this from the buttons on the bar itself out the LG Sound Bar app. So it's not "necessary" but a nice to have.
