Yes, you can set the aspect ratio to All-Direction Zoom the picture to make it full screen in the settings menu (Picture → Aspect Ratio Settings → Aspect Ratio). ^Daphane

Video comes in multiple "aspect ratios". Some are more rectangular (newer) and some more square (older). You can't display the latter as the former because it is hard to turn a squarish shape into a rectangle. Thus they display the square withing the rectangle with black where it does not fit.

Depends on how your watching it. If it’s like a videotape then you’d have to try to adjust it thru the settings. If thru cable, direct tv, or dish network; then you may be able to adjust the picture thru i you our remote. By either pressing the star or pound buttons.
